The Fox Tail
The Fox Tail restaurant in Roppongi is renowned for its excellent Crab meat dishes. After walking into this charming establishment and surveying the menu I found much more.
The ala carte menu offers a large variety of tantalizing dishes priced at Y500-Y1,200. You can start your dining experience with the Rainbow Salad, which has seven different thinly sliced vegetables. It is lightly tossed at tableside with a honey mustard sesame seed oil dressing sprinkled with sesame seeds.
The sashimi section offers an array of six different choices to please the taste buds of any sashimi lover. The Scallop Coquille baked in a light potato and cream sauce is marvelous, and an the crab meat shumai served with a shoyu ginger dip is an excellent treat.
Two soups that are very interesting and a must try are the Kani zosui which is a rice porridge with pickled plum. The soup salad is an unusually delicious bouillon with five garden vegetables dipped into the soup. The variety of fresh fish and noodle dishes are too numerous to try and mention at this time. I can only say it is an Epicurean delight.
The charbroiled steak dinner offers a choice filet mignon or sirloin with baked potato and vegetables served on a sizzling hot silver platter. A superb melt-in-your mouth tender steak is priced at Y5,900, and for steak lovers it is well worth it. The menu also offers complete five-course dinners beginning at Y3,500. One visit to this establishment is not enough.
To complement your dinner is an excellent wine list with a few of my favorites. An Italian, Chanti, Ruffino vintage '95, French Cote Chateau, De Ruth Du Rhone, American, Fetzer Pino Noir White wines, a German Madonna Kabinett and a Fetzer Fume Blanca.
The house wine by the glass is Santa Carolina of Spain. They offer four wines: Cabernet Sauvignon, Marlot, and Chardonnay Sauvignon for Y700.
The restaurant's elegant decor is done in a deep red enhanced with decorative mirrors. There are also six large aquariums. The restaurant lighting is perfect with candles on each table creating a romantic atmosphere. The music is soft Jazz with a mixture of Frank Sinatra tunes. There are private booths that are available on request and perfect for that extra special occasion when you want just the two of you. Depending on choices, a romantic dinner experience can be had Fox Tail for about Y6,000 to Y8,000 per person.
Fox Tail is located at Houraiya Bldg. B1, 5-2-1 Roppongi, Tel. 03-3405-7191. From the famous Almond coffee shop at the main Roppongi crossing, walk one and half blocks toward Tokyo Tower. Fox Tail is on the right side of the street sign is well displayed. I Suggest reservations if dinning from 6:00 p.m.- 9:00 p.m. Restaurant hours are 5:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. every day except Sundays and holidays then 5:00 p.m. to midnight
