Thanksgiving
in America
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?
Even the very first THANKSGIVING had its share of unexpected guests (see full story in JT Nov 98 issue), when the natives showed up with all their friends. In those days, lobster and venison were as important as turkey is today, and at this most famous of harvest celebrations, there was indeed plenty to go around.
This year many Japanese as well as American workers in Japan will cross the pacific for Thanksgiving. Along the picturesque Atlantic shores of Massachusetts many will relive that original three-day adventure. Plymouth Plantation in Plymouth Massachusetts (nearest international airport is Logan at Boston) recreates those early pre-colonial times (circa 1628). An entire, functioning village complete with genuine native American Indians (and translations in Japanese) awaits you. It was here that this busiest US travel holiday was born.
At hand too, are the museums, whale-watch cruises, and sand-duned splendor of Cape Cod. A bus ride away are the historical witch memorials of Salem where over 300 "witches' were imprisoned in 1692 (full story in JT Oct. 98 issue) and the fall foliage tours that travel to breathtaking mountain vistas where the green becomes a sea of gold and crimson. Harvard University, which conducts free tours almost hourly (full story in JT March 99 issue) lies halfway between Plymouth and Salem (or 90 Y by train from the airport). The Thanksgiving holiday is November 25 till 29 th. Guess who's coming to dinner. . . maybe you!
