The Movies

STAR TREK INSURRECTION (started May 8 in Japan) The Next Generation crew battles bad guys who want the proverbial fountain of youth, with the expected special effects, and the captain finds love. Proper enough for the kids, but not of much interest to most of them. Fans will enjoy it, but other may wish to wait for the video which was released-outside of Japan-in May. RATINGS: Adults B, Kids C.

MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (now playing) is the remake of the classic 50-year-old film. With 97% exactly the same DNA as humans, this formidable gorilla may have more than we in the category of compassion. RATINGS: Adults B+, Kids B-

ENEMY OF THE STATE (now playing) is a 1998 futuristic chase-scene action flick in Orwellian big brother setting. Will Smith (same name as the lead character in Lost in Space) stars as the innocent victim of the NSA. RATINGS: Adults B, Kids D

GLORIA (coming) is a dreadful remake directed by Sidny Lumet. Slow moving. RATINGS: Adults D, Kids D-

THE THIN RED LINE is an artsy surreal counter to Saving Private Ryan which also takes place in the same time frame. Unlike Ryan, it is in a South Pacific, rather than European setting and involves the Japanese rather than the Germans. Its effective message is war is no picnic. RATINGS: Adults A, Kids C – Photo left.
